I’ve been challenging myself lately to build some more complicated illustrations. It is a longer process to build each component and layer it into a cohesive composition but I enjoy creating them because they invite the viewer to look around. Sometimes art is fun to look at or its beautiful and creates visual interest, but illustrations like these are telling a story. It isn’t an entire book of pictures either because it’s usually one detailed illustration that you can ‘read’ and get the story from the clues provided in the picture.
I also like them because they are interesting and fun to look around. Each time you look, you will notice different details.
It is a way to create a mood or feeling and practice creating space, perspective, or depth in your work. I’m slowly getting the hang of it because backgrounds have never been something I enjoyed working on. But I do enjoy world building just about as much as I enjoy creating characters which is my favorite!
