Everyone Needs a Cheerleader...
Moving forward with the intention of finding a community and support
I have been solely focused on two things for the past year. Writing and publishing my books and building both my writing skills and illustration skills. The other big focus has been building my portfolio.
Since the beginning of this journey I knew that I wanted to find an agent and be a part of a community that supports and cheers for each other. I have been able to do a lot on my own working out of my little home office BUT I have always wanted to be a part of a group of artists who teach and encourage each other. A community with a mentor or leader that really champions my work and pushes me to become a better artist and version of myself as a professional.
I can only get so far on my own. It is time to find that group of people.
My dream is to get into an agency with an art director or agent who sees the potential of my work and directs their artists with briefs, suggestions, and constructive criticism. I want to spent my time creating and interacting with other artists NOT going over contracts, trying to find work, pitching, and tracking down payments.
Sure, lots of people totally do all this on their own by pitching and finding clients themselves. However, if you are thinking about finding an agent, make sure to research and compile your lists in order of interest. Start reaching out and talking to people, sharing your website and curated portfolio, and start participating in challenges that will get you on the radar of certain people. I find it helpful to listen to their talks f they have them online and to ask other people who have worked with them to get a sense of their personality and style. It is very competitive to get into an agency and its important to do your research into the other artists and see if your work ‘fits’ with the style of the agency while also not being too similar to someone else. Putting your work next to their artist’s page of work is a good way to see how your work fits in with the agency you are hoping to join.
I have my dream picks and hope they feel the same about me. I do trust that in time, the stars will align with the right person and agency. With a little boldness and putting my best foot forward, I hope to achieve this goal soon. Wish me luck!
